Leather and suede feature different textures and finishes. Leather is made from the outside of a hide, whereas suede is created from the inside. Men’s suede jackets generally have a smooth texture and matte finish, while leather is often harder with a shine depending on how it has been treated. Although these feel like wholly different materials, suede is actually a type of leather.
Both leather and suede jackets come in various styles which differ depending on the cut and the neckline.
Varsity jackets, also known as letterman jackets, traditionally featured a college’s varsity letter on the left breast. Nowadays it no longer has to feature the letter, but still shows sport striped rib finishes on the cuffs and the neck. This can then also feature a zip-up closure.
Trucker jackets generally feature a slim tailored cut and a point collar. These jackets traditionally are made of denim, however, adding leather or suede offers a modern twist on the classic.
Bomber jackets were originally worn by the military air force from the 1950s onwards. These jackets feature elasticated bands at the waist and cuffs and a zip-up closure for ease and comfort.
Finally, as the name suggests, shirt jackets take the shape of a standard shirt. This will feature a classic pointed collar similar to a shirt, with the added advantage of a zip. In a suede finish, this jacket offers a unique garment that is easily paired.
Leather jackets are suited to most occasions, from a casual street style to worn over a shirt for a rugged formality. A leather jacket is ideal for a smart-casual look when a blazer feels too much. Also, because of the durable and warm material, a leather or suede coat is perfect for an autumnal coverup.
A leather jacket works over most outfits. For a laid-back style, consider a graphic tee, a pair of distressed jeans and some sneakers with a suede jacket or brown leather jacket. To make this look more winterproof, add a men’s scarf. To dress you style up a little, pair your favourite leather jacket with a shirt and some men’s trousers.
The most important part of your leather jacket is to ensure it fits you properly. Measure three different areas of your torso to get you perfect fit. First measure the widest part of your chest, with your arms kept down. Next measure your natural waistline, which is the narrow part just above your belly button. Finally, measure your hips at the widest part. Once you have these three figures use our size guide to find the best size for you. Our sizes range from S-XXL.
