Choosing better cotton – and its farmers
Spotlight on: alternative fabric sources
Speaking of which, when cotton is produced organically, it requires 95% less water which results in it being a much more sustainable fibre choice. For cotton to be considered organic, it needs to be grown on land that has been certified free of pesticides for at least three years and from plants which are not genetically modified. In addition to using much less water, the production of organic cotton also engages fair labour practices, and nets higher prices for the cotton farmer.
