Limited-edition Born To Love bag:
Scotch & Soda X Studio 189

Raffia bag SS22
Introducing our limited-edition Born to Love bag made in collaboration with our friends at Studio189, an artisan-produced fashion lifestyle brand and social enterprise based in New York (USA) and Accra (Ghana). They support community-led projects primarily in West Africa and act as a platform to help promote and curate African fashion internationally.

Launched as part of our latest Born to Love collection, the bag celebrates unity and love and is handcrafted by a community of weavers in Bolgatanga, in the Northern Region of Ghana.

All proceeds from the sale of the bag will be donated to our partner The Hunger Project, to support the organization's initiatives in Africa.

TOGETHER WITH STUDIO 189

We worked together with Studio 189, co-founded by actress Rosario Dawson and luxury executive Abrima Erwiah, to create our Born to Love bag, designed and produced at the Studio189 Product Development Center in Accra.

Studio 189 aim to create well-designed products, as sustainably as possible, by collaborating with communities across Ghana and focus on empowerment, creating jobs and supporting education and skills training.

For this collaboration, Studio 189 chose to work together with Advocacy for Social Inclusion and Girls Education (ASIGE), a charity based in Bolgatanga that invests in social programs and vocational training for women and young girls.

THE MAKING OF THE BAG

Made with skill and love, it takes around one week for an experienced artisan to make each bag.
Your new statement bag for on-the-go, it carries everything you need for the beach, the city, or anywhere in between.

TRADITIONAL
CRAFTSMANSHIP

Created using traditional basket weaving techniques unique to the upper East area of Bolgatanga, each bag is woven in a unique horizontal pattern. This is a small-scale process: it takes around three to four weeks to get all the materials ready, prior to the weaving stage.

LOCALLY SOURCED, NATURALLY DYED

Each bag is made from locally sourced Palmyra leaf fibres (a.k.a. raffia), found in the region either from nature or at local markets. For the vibrant stripes of colour, natural pigments extracted from hibiscus, millet husk and other plant leaves have been used as dye. The colors are inspired by flowers, plants and herbs in Ghana.

ABOUT ASIGE AND THE COMMUNITY

Highly skilled weavers from the Bolgatanga community handmade our bags – weaving and crafting basket bags is part of a larger initiative from ASIGE, founded in 2016 by Dorcas Apoore, which invests in social programs and vocational training for women.
Weaving provides work for local communities of women (from 18 years old and up), and is a source of income to support their basic living expenses. The work is flexible and adapted to their personal lives and schedules.
